Mandeville, LA – Yesterday, February 11 was the 163rd anniversary of a miracle we are all familiar with. A French peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. As she approached a grotto near a river, she saw a light coming from a spot near a rosebush. The light surrounded a woman who wore a white dress and held a rosary. Seeing the lady in white make the sign of the Cross, Bernadette knelt, took out her own rosary, and began to pray. When she finished praying, the woman motioned for her to approach. But she remained still, and the vision disappeared. Here is the actual account of this apparition:
“I SAW A LADY DRESSED IN WHITE, SHE WORE A WHITE DRESS, AN EQUALLY WHITE VEIL, A BLUE BELT AND A YELLOW ROSE ON EACH FOOT.”
The local priest & Bishop demanded that Bernadette ask the identity of the lady, but the lady would not say, finally, on the Feast of the Annunciation the woman folded her hands, looked up and said: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” On the 8th of December, 1933, Pope Pius XI declared the Blessed Marie-Bernard Soubirous, Saint.
“To the honour of the most Holy and Undivided Trinity, for the glory of the Catholic Faith, and the increase in the Christian Faith, by the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after a lengthy deliberation calling often on divine help, the advice of our brother Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, the Patriarchs, the Archbishops and bishops, we declare and define Saint, the Blessed Marie-Bernard Soubirous, and we inscribe her in the Litany of the Saints, stating that her memory be piously celebrated in the Universal Church on 16th. April each year, the day of her heavenly birth. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Sprit. “
At the end of the Solemn Mass celebrated by Pope Pius XI, the crowd spontaneously intoned the singing of the “Ave Maria” of Lourdes as it is sung in the Sanctuary of Lourdes.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.

I don’t intend to imply that it’s on the same level, but 10 years ago on this day February 11, 2007 something I’ll forever believe to be a miracle also occurred. My daughter, and now Angel Bryn; who had pneumonia we later learned, was transported via the Critical Care team to Children’s Hospital where they “lost her” two times enroute. Once at Children’s we “lost” her twice more. After getting her up to the MS/ICU, and while waiting in the waiting room on the MS/ICU floor, we met a Catholic Nun, Sister Carlotta who asked us if we’d like to pray with her. I broke down and told her that I probably couldn’t pray with her because I didn’t go to church, I was a “bad Catholic” etc. etc. She told me none of that mattered in the least, but if I wanted to pray with her, we could certainly do that. My husband and I did, and that was the first day of the nearly 21 months that we got to have with my special and most awesome daughter. I remember the story of Bernadette from Catholic school as a child, but I don’t think I ever knew the day was February 11th. As I said though, I don’t mean to imply that my story is on the same level, but that being said, I know in my heart and am absolutely convinced that based on everything that happened to Bryn after that day, God intervened. We were blessed with a miracle of sorts; an additional 21 months with one of the strongest people (my 12 yo, at the time) amazing, special needs Hero, aka my little girl Bryn.
