Mandeville, LA Exclusive Audio and Transcript – And so it begins: Romney begins the long, predictable process of informing the country that deficit spending “grows the economy” and Ron Paul’s plan would “cost a lot of people their jobs”. “My job is to get America back on track to have a balanced budget. Now I’m not going to cut $1 trillion in the first year”. So Romney is beginning the process of pushing away the Ron Paul supporters because he’s a decepticon and he favors big government. And hear Romney talking about the auto industry bailout, sounds like he’ll just bail anyone out. Check out today’s Post Show preview for more…

Mike: Here’s a big news item. I talked about this and played this digital media file yesterday. Let me take you back to yesterday’s show. This is Governor Mitt Romney sitting down with a television reporter from Cleveland, Ohio.

Governor Romney: The auto companies needed to go through bankruptcy before government help. Frankly, that’s finally what the President did. He finally took them through bankruptcy. That was the right course I argued for from the very beginning. Finally when that was done and help was given, the companies got back on their feet. I’ll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry has come back.

Mike: Uh, I’ll take an awful lot of credit? They shouldn’t have gotten a bailout. What he just said was, [mocking] “They’re gonna get a bailout, aren’t they? Yeah, they did, and they should have, as long as they claimed bankruptcy first.” So does that mean that any company that goes and claims bankruptcy gets a wink and a nod from President Romney? All you guys have to do is claim bankruptcy and then we’ll claim it’s in the national interest to have you reopen with a bailout. It’s an advance. Just think of it as an advance. You don’t have to pay it back, but it’s an advance. This is really troubling.
Somebody brought up the point, “Mike, maybe Governor Romney is saying that because what he wants to do is get ahead of an issue in the debates that he knows Obama is going to bring up.” He did say, “It was my idea.” I don’t know that being on the side of bailouts and the government picking winners and losers is the side a conservative is supposed to be on. Then again, I seem to not find myself on the side of almost anything that today’s conservatives claim to stand for.
There’s another part of this. Governor Romney, at the same event, earlier that day, said this, “My job is to get America back on track, to have a balanced budget. Now I’m not going to cut $1 trillion in the first year.” He was distancing himself from Congressman Ron Paul’s Plan to Restore America. Some Paul supporter in the crowd yelled out, “Why not?” Romney responded, “The reason is taking a trillion dollars out of a $15 trillion economy would cause our economy to shrink and would put a lot of people out of work.”
That’s even more troubling. The trillion dollars that is in the economy that Paul is talking about cutting, and would cut $1.5 trillion the second year, is borrowed money. It’s printed money. It doesn’t even exist. People that are employed on borrowed money that has to be paid back by future generations, that’s economic activity to the former Governor of Massachusetts? Wow. If you’re thinking about doing this and holding your nose and voting for Romney, he just keeps making it more difficult, more and more difficult. You’re shaking your head going, “I just can’t do it. I can’t do it.”
I’m reminded of Rodney Dangerfield in the movie Back to School when Dean Martin, “Well, Phillip, what do you want me to do? Now, Thornton, did you cheat? Did you have someone else write this paper?” Of course, Rodney Dangerfield did. He had Kurt Vonnegut write a paper about Kurt Vonnegut. Dangerfield shakes his head and goes, “Dean Martin, I cannot lie. No.” So you’re thinking you’re going to vote for Romney. You’re going, “Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna hold my nose. I’m gonna do it. No, I can’t.” Food for thought.
