Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – Is it patriotic to dissent? I think it’s patriotic to try to talk your country out of going to war. When you see the photographs of the aftermath of American exceptionalism in Iraq, American exceptionalism in Kosovo, American exceptionalism in Somalia and what have you, when you see the aftermath of this and you see the destruction that is wrought by this, if this level and type of destruction were wrought upon an American city by any other government on Earth, it wouldn’t matter which one it was, our response would be outrage. Mike: Is it patriotic to dissent? I think it’s patriotic to try to talk your country out of going to war. When you see the photographs of the aftermath of American exceptionalism in Iraq, American exceptionalism in Kosovo, American exceptionalism in Somalia and what have you, when you see the aftermath of this and you see the destruction that is wrought by this, if this level and type of destruction were wrought upon an American city by any other government on Earth, it wouldn’t matter which one it was, our response would be outrage. Our response would be: How dare they!? Our response would be: This is the height of inhumane treatment! We would not tolerate this. We would move Heaven and Earth to put anyone back a couple centuries using our military hardware if what we routinely seem to think is okay to do to cities and other countries, if it was done to one of our cities.
I want to read you a couple things here on the building case against intervention in Syria. I think I tweeted out some of these on Friday from Representative Justin Amash of Michigan. Mish Shedlock has a rundown of these at Mish’s Global Economic Trend Analysis, “If Americans Could Read Classified Documents They’d Be Even More Against Syrian War. On Friday Amash was tweeting the following out:
[reading]
Tweet #1: If Americans could read classified docs, they’d be even more against Syria action. Obama admn’s public statements are misleading at best.
Tweet #2: Attended another classified briefing on Syria & reviewed add’l materials. Now more skeptical than ever. Can’t believe Pres is pushing war.
Tweet #3: Asked Obama admn officials to correct admn’s public statements that are inconsistent w/ info presented at briefings. Public must have facts.
Tweet #4: If you’re voting yes on military action in Syria, might as well start cleaning out your office. Unprecedented level of public opposition.end reading]
Mike: Amash had sponsored an amendment, which was defeated, by the way, with John Conyers.
[reading]
The Amash-Conyers amendment ends NSA’s blanket collection of Americans’ telephone records. It does this by requiring the FISA court under Sec. 215 to order the production of records that pertain only to a person under investigation.

Mike: This was voted down in the Republican- “conservative” Congress, if you can believe that. The amendment went down in flames, 217-205. In other words, to vote it down was 217 to 205.
