This Day In Founders History – 22 November
On this day in 1775, Continental Congress resolved that the colonies would export fixed amounts of provisions to Bermuda in return for badly-needed salt for the colonies. Unlimited quantities of food would be exported if return cargoes contained military supplies. ”That the Inhabitants of the island of Bermuda appear friendly to the cause of America, and ought to be supplied with such and so great a quantity of the produce of these colonies, as may be necessary for their subsistence and home consumption…That the said Inhabitants ought to pay for the above annual allowance in salt, but it is not the design of this resolution to exclude them from the priviledge of receiving American produce to any amount in exchange for arms, ammunition, salt petre, sulphur, and field pieces.”
One notable birthday on this day in history in 1744, that of Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams. She was the first Second Lady and second First Lady of the U.S. Adams is probably best remembered for her correspondence to her husband while he was serving Congress in Philadelphia. She was a source of advice for Adams on matters both political and intellectual, and now a great source of historical accounts of the Revolutionary War.
