This Day In Founding Fathers History – 23 January
On this day in Founding Fathers History in 1964, the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified by Congress. The amendment reads: The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied by the Unites States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax. 1
One notable birthday on this day in history in 1730, that of Joseph Hewes. Hewes studied at Princeton and afterwards pursued business in Philadelphia, finally settling down in North Carolina. He was very involved in politics, serving in the state House of Commons, Committee of Correspondence, Provincial Congress, and the Continental Congress where he signed the Declaration of Independence. 2
