Mandeville LA – When the United States entered World War I in 1915, Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan resigned in protest informing the President he had “an obligation to my country” to oppose Wilson’s war. Bryan was a pacifist. The next year, the Dorn’s of Greenwood SC named their son “William Jennings Bryan Dorn”. Today there’s a VA hospital that ironically bears Dorn’s name and is one that denied care to thousands of vets. While vets were being denied life saving medical services, agitators in and outside of Congress were busy cooking up new HUD rules aimed at providing subsidies to unqualified mortgage applicants so that President Obama’s latest attempt to “remake America” could further expand into the suburbs via the misnamed “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.”
Rep. Paul Gosar of AZ offered an Amendment that would bar funding for this bit of social engineering, five of Louisiana’s six members of Congress voted with Gosar. Gosar says that the rules “…would be derived from … citizens’ race, sex, religion and other federally protected demographics.” This of course elicits the predictable howls of protest that the poor are denied access to better housing and better schools. These claims may or may not be accurate and seem to me to be the sort of thing private charities and communities need to work out themselves. But the claims of Veterans waiting for medical services at hospitals like Dorn are real and getting worse. Why aren’t they a “federally protected demographic?”
The U.S. Constitution REQUIRES the Congress to “raise and support Armies” but says nothing about housing loans and neighborhood engineering. Those vets waiting for care include tens of thousands from Louisiana. When they were injured in our wars, the enemy didn’t ask what kind of neighborhood they came from yet Americans find the time to compare what one neighbor has to what another does not. If only there were more welfare pacifists at HUD.
