Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – What is shocking now is just the normalcy of stating to anyone: Yeah, I’m a single mom.  No big deal.  We’re doing all right.  You’re thinking, number one: Where’s the dad?  Where are all these dads?  Where are these young fellows out there?  You can’t just blame this on the girls.  As a matter of fact, I would say it is more the fault of the young men.  How are we raising entire generations of young men that do not feel the tug of parental responsibility when they are the ones that pulled the trigger, so to speak, and equally participated in the awesome power of creating and bringing a new life into the world?”  Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

Mike:  Patrick J. Buchanan wrote this last week.  I never got to it but it’s still relevant today. [reading] The real issue: Will America remain one nation, or are we on the road to Balkanization and the breakup of America into ethnic enclaves? For, as Ronald Reagan said, a nation that cannot control its borders isn’t really a nation anymore….

Our Problem’s Not Illegals, It’s The Morality Border Between Good & Evil AbbyMcGinnis

In Federalist No. 2, John Jay wrote,

“Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people – a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs …”

He called Americans a “band of brethren, united to each other by the strongest ties.” The republic of the founders for whom Jay spoke did not give a fig for diversity. They cherished our unity, commonality, and sameness of ancestry, culture, faith, and traditions. We were not a nation of immigrants in 1789.

They came later. From 1845-1849, the Irish fleeing the famine. From 1890-1920, the Germans. Then the Italians, Poles, Jews, and other Eastern Europeans. Then, immigration was suspended in 1924.

From 1925 to 1965, the children and grandchildren of those immigrants were assimilated, Americanized. In strong public schools, they were taught our language, literature, and history, and celebrated our holidays and heroes. We endured together through the Depression and sacrificed together in World War II and the Cold War. By 1960, we had become truly one nation and one people.

America was not perfect. No country is. But no country ever rivaled what America had become. She was proud, united, free, the first nation on earth. And though the civil rights movement had just begun, nowhere did black peoples enjoy the freedom and prosperity of African-Americans.

But we are no longer that “band of brethren.” We are no longer one unique people “descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion.” We are from every continent and country. Nearly 4 in 10 Americans trace their ancestry to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We are a multiracial, multilingual, multicultural society in a world where countless countries are being torn apart over race, religion, and roots.

We no longer speak the same language, worship the same God, honor the same heroes or share the same holidays. Christmas and Easter have been privatized. Columbus is reviled. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee are out of the pantheon. Cesar Chavez is in. Our politics have become poisonous. Our political parties are at each other’s throats. Christianity is in decline. Traditional churches are sundering over moral issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. Islam is surging.

Our society seems to be disintegrating. Over 40 percent of all births now are illegitimate. Among Hispanics, the figure is 52 percent. Among African-Americans, 73 percent. And among children born to single moms, the drug use rate and the dropout rate, the crime rate and the incarceration rate, are many times higher than among children born to married parents.

Mike:  I’ll leave you to read Buchanan’s conclusion and what he thinks ought to be done.  I would just offer an anecdote.  Recently, upon stopping at one of my favorite watering / eating holes locally, I was greeted by a serverette.  She was nice enough and cheerful enough.  After the pleasantries of eating and drinking, do you need a menu, blah, blah, somehow the conversation came up of what the latest hangover that was being suffered was.  It was discovered, through our server, that the hangover that she had dreaded suffering the most was the one that she had most recently suffered, and that was from consuming too much tequila, or too much of what it is that — what’s the guy from Goodfellas — Ray Liotta is plugging these days.  Eric, are you drinking 1800 nowadays?

Eric:  I’ve been told to stay away from tequila by several people.

Mike:  Even though Ray Liotta told you to order a glass on the rocks?

Eric:  Either him or Kiefer Sutherland.

Mike:  Then the subject came up that that was a rare occurrence because this lady had not drank like that any longer since she had had her daughter.  So the conversation escalated a bit and then, come to find out, that was a daughter born out of wedlock and now residing with the waitress / bartending mother, with no mention of the father at all.  Here’s what was striking and shocking all at the same time.  You would have to put yourself in the mindset that there are still some things about Christian morality and about the order of the family unit as handed down to us, not only from antiquity, but as restated and lived by our Lord.  There’s ample gospel to back that up, that that was the order, and that if the son of God said this was the order how it was intended and the purpose of marriage, then there’s only one way, in keeping with a pursuit of the graces, to bring children into this world.  It had been reviled and treated as a taboo and as a moral affront and a sin for millennia.

What is shocking now is just the normalcy of stating to anyone: Yeah, I’m a single mom.  No big deal.  We’re doing all right.  You’re thinking, number one: Where’s the dad?  Where are all these dads?  Where are these young fellows out there?  You can’t just blame this on the girls.  As a matter of fact, I would say it is more the fault of the young men.  How are we raising entire generations of young men that do not feel the tug of parental responsibility when they are the ones that pulled the trigger, so to speak, and equally participated in the awesome power of creating and bringing a new life into the world?

Folks, we are, as a society, just failing absolutely miserably in this endeavor.  I’m not talking about sex education; I’m talking about moral stigma, about placing that portion of morality above reproach.  There are no exceptions to the rule.  Do not break it.  Do not think about breaking it.  Do not attempt to break it.  Do not put yourself in a situation where it can be broken, no exceptions.  Instead, [mocking] “Kids are gonna do it.  We should prepare them.  Wear this.  Take that.  Ingest this.”  Look at the results.  They’re horrific, absolutely horrific.  Seventy-five percent, 3 of 4 African-American children are born with no dad.  And you wonder why there are problems?  Nearly 50 percent of children now born to middle to lower-middle class whites, almost 50 percent, no dad, none.  Over 60 percent Hispanic — we’ve been talking about the border and immigration here, so we know that there’s an influx of Hispanics.  Sixty percent have no father.[/private]

The father is the center of the familial unit, as it was intended.  No, I am not demeaning, I am not knocking down the value of the mother.  That’s not the point.  Save it.  Folks, this is a human generational tragedy of epic, and I would say unknown, proportions in the history of mankind.  Yet we’re obsessing over whether or not we ought to be bossing Ukraine or Russia or Yemen about and ordering them about the entire planet.  Where do we get the moral authority to tell anyone to do anything?  Not that we’re unique in this demonic, sinful existence that we currently are so boastful and proud of.

So, Buchanan is onto something, but I think that until enough of us are willing to risk public reputation, which will be seriously in jeopardy here, to call into mind our tragic moral state of affairs, and to demand — there’s no policy, other than policy that makes it permissive, there’s no policy prescription here.  There is only a spiritual prescription.  That’s it.  You can think that the era of man and our genius and science and we can solve all these problems.  Why do they seem to then be compounding themselves if that’s the case?  Science keeps advancing, yet illegitimacy rates keep going up.  The amount of poor and impoverished continues to increase.  The amount of those locked up and incarcerated in our jails are up.  The measurable education levels of children continues to slowly erode and decline.  There’s no indication that the infatuation with man as god or government as god has borne anything other than rotten fruit.  So why don’t we stop it?  Why don’t we stop it?  That’s the great desideratum of our day.  It’s not a political one; it’s one of spirit.
