Mike:  How about Vince in North Carolina?  Hello, Vince.  How you doing?

Caller Vince:  Good to talk to you again.  I enjoy hearing my friend Matt Boyle there as well.  I wanted to talk —

Mike:  You’re buddies with Matt Boyle?

Caller Vince:  Sure, why not?

Mike:  I don’t know, because it might be true?  Go ahead, please.

Caller Vince:  Here’s my question for you.  I know this is kind of a dangerous subject to delve into because I want to — I agree with most of what you say.  I think you’re one of the smartest talk shows out there, dealing on a depth that most Americans, unfortunately, can’t begin to get engaged on.  I think that’s wonderful.  One area —

Mike:  We’re in trouble now, folks.  Here it comes.  But . . .

Caller Vince:  I know that’s always dangerous.

Mike:  I knew the pause and the but was coming.  Hit me, brother.  What is it?

Caller Vince:  Here is my question.  Obviously I’m coming at this from a different theological perspective.  One of the things that I think is important — let me give you the analogy.  Our Constitution, we are a nation of laws not of men, correct?

Mike:  Well, that’s what they tell us, yes.

Caller Vince:  Yes, theoretically.  We know that’s been shot to hell in recent decades.  Here’s where I have concerns with this — this mindset is also lost in the church.  I’ll tell you what I mean by this.  By ascribing authority to human beings, we risk doing the same thing that’s happened to our country with progressivism when authority is shifted from something that is objective and everybody is able to analyze — everybody can read the Constitution, for instance.  They can know what it says and make judgments about it.  We can hold our system accountable.  Theoretically that’s the way it’s supposed to work.  The hierarchical system that’s established by the Catholic Church, does it not lend itself to the very progressivism that you are opposed to?  Authority is shifted from an objective perspective to a person.  I just always —

Mike:  A couple of things.  Number one, authority has to reside on earth somewhere and in something or someone because we are men.  We’re humans.  We have intellect and we have freewill.  There has to be some authority.

Caller Vince:  Here’s my question, Mike.

Mike:  Go ahead.

Caller Vince:  What is the basis of that authority?  Is that authority based on a position or a title somebody is given or is it based on their orthodoxy and their fidelity to truth?

Mike:  It would be arguable or debatable as to whether the 300 — I can’t remember now.  I’ll have to look this up.  The 300-plus men that have been titled the Vicar of Christ here on earth, it’s debatable as to whether all of them were in possession of, personally speaking, of unfiltered and perfect revealed truth.  We know this because they’re fallible.  They have committed fallacies.  They are prevented, though, from committing fallacy in the name of magisterial teaching.  We get magister from the Latin for teacher.  We get that from the teaching of Christ.  The Vicar of Christ then is supposed to be the defender of that.  The defender of what truth has been revealed and has been part of that magisterial teaching.
