Daniel Larison echoes McCarthy’s point but the following makes no logical sense:

How would one bring “disfavor” on “honesty as the best policy” for example? In his dying days Patrick Henry told Archibald Blair that “virtue, morality, and religion” were the principles that alone would defend our republic. Can anyone of those fall into “disfavor” ? They may be ignored by arrogant men but that’s a story of ecclesiastical suffrage

Solzhenitsyn comes to the same conclusion about 20th century Russia that I am arriving at with 21st century U.S.A., we have abandoned God for the comforts of economics, nationalism and the power of a supreme state. How did that work out for the once mighty Russian people?
