The Holy Solution For First World Problems At McDonald’s

Background

When you think your day is going bad and you’ve suffered enough denial of fast service at McDonald’s or imperfectly ripened avocado’s at the nearby TexMex Choke and Puke, recall the martyrdom of Saint Vincent of Saragossa.

Mandeville, LA – Today the Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Vincent of Saragossa who suffered a long and tortuous martyrdom and finally died on the 22nd of January, 304. He was ordained to the diaconate by Saint Valerius, Bishop of Saragossa, and commissioned to do the preaching in the diocese. Because Valerius suffered from a speech impediment, Vincent acted as his spokesman. When the Roman Emperor Diocletian began persecuting Christians in Spain, Vincent answered in the bishop’s name and both were brought before Dacian, the Roman Governor. He spoke eloquently for both his bishop and his church, proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and condemning paganism. Then Valerius was exiled, but Vincent was subjected to many cruel torments. He was stretched upon a rack, torn with metal hooks, and laid upon a frame of sharp iron bars heated from beneath by fire; lard and salt were rubbed into his wounds. After his death the emperor had St Vincent’s body thrown into a field to be ravaged by animals but a raven appeared and protected it. His body was then tied in a sack weighted down by stones and thrown into the sea but it miraculously was washed on the shore and preserved by the faithful.

St Vincent is the first Spanish martyr and is even mentioned in a sermon by St Augustine. He is the patron saint of bakers, roof-makers, sailors, schoolgirls, vinedressers, vintners, tile-makers, and roofers.
Saint Vincent’s Cathedral in Hellngblut, Austria. The gothic pilgrimage church dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, built 1460-1491, raises up against the background of the Austrian snowy Grossglockner mountain, the highest mountain (3,798 m) of Austria.
