Kristan Hawkins: The other big issue that we see, that we deal with more on a day-to-day basis is this issue of offense, this issue of safe spaces and trigger warnings. Even when you’re not showing the graphic reality of what abortion is, just merely discussing the issue will get massive trigger warning alerts sent out by the campus administration. A safe space is put up on campus because that’s painful to think about and talk about. It’s this coddling of young people: You don’t have to think about something that you don’t want to think about. You can completely ignore these human rights injustices. That, to me, is one of the scariest things. You have a society that is literally being taught that they don’t have to think about the hard things.
Mike: Kristan, a question I have, and I didn’t get to ask this of you last time because I hadn’t thought about it. I did think about it last night when I was putting together today’s prep for this. What happens when someone that is working with or volunteering with Students for Life, what happens when one of you guys or gals actually encounters someone that is about ready to go drop the 500 bucks and go do the horrific, diabolical, abortive deed at a Planned Parenthood clinic? Is there a line that they call? Do you have counseling? Do you try to intervene? Walk me through what might happen with Students for Life or anyone that’s really concerned about it that you know that’s with Students for Life?
Hawkins: There’s three ways our students get contacted by women in these crisis situations, that are moments away from aborting their child. One is right there in front of the abortion facility when they’re sidewalk counseling or praying. Another is on campus at our displays. A third is remote, via email, via social media. [unintelligible] promoted its website, its hotline number on campuses. Usually we have groups that have hotline numbers. They’ve got emails that they promote on campus for students to confidentially email.
If they’re in a crisis, the Students for Life groups are trained – we have an initiative in our office called the Pregnant on Campus initiative where we train the student groups to be able to respond to these crisis pregnancies, to meet with the woman, get her to a local pregnancy resource center, walk with her, take her there, offer to take her to the administration and go with her to the administration as she tries to figure out how she can stay in school and remain pregnant. They’re told how to do that. Actually at our national conference which is coming up this Saturday in DC and Sunday in San Francisco, we’ll do a whole session on how to counsel these girls. When we’re doing displays on campus, a lot of guys will walk up to us saying: My girlfriend is about ready to have an abortion. What do I say? These groups are teamed with local resources out there.
Often what we’ve found – I wrote a book a few years ago and interviewed a bunch of young people about their decision to either choose abortion or choose life. Really, what struck me the most out of this was, in every abortion decision or every decision for life, it always came down to one person. A young girl never wanted to have the abortion. The question was whether or not she had somebody in her life telling her: You don’t have to do this. The girls who chose life – I met one girl, Andrea from St. Louis. She got pregnant. She ended up calling nine different friends one night asking them what she should do.
Mike: Nine?
Hawkins: The first eight told her to have the abortion. She didn’t want to do it, so she kept calling because she was trying to find one person to tell her: You don’t have to do it. That’s how easy it is. You just have to say: You don’t have to do this. You have options.
Mike: Young Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life was telling us what happens when they try to intervene in a situation where a student at one of the universities is about to undergo an abortion. You heard her say that one young lady tried to call someone that would talk her out of it. Eight friends said: Nah, if that’s what makes you feel good, if that’s what you think you need to do, sweetheart, you need to go and do that. Eight friends! Then the ninth one finally said: No, I don’t think you should do that. You ought to call these people and get a second opinion. You ought to talk to someone else about this, or whatever the case may be.
David Simpson: What is that number? Eleven percent.
Mike: So 89 percent say it’s perfectly fine. It’s okay if you’ve got to do that.
Simpson: We’ve got to remember the age group, the college age group probably. So 89 percent of the college group are moral relativists.
Mike: Kristan Hawkins from Students for Life is back on the Dude Maker Hotline with us. We ran the math, my special guest in studio David Simpson and I, and 89 percent of the friends that the woman you were telling the story about all told her to do the wrong thing.
Hawkins: That’s right.
Mike: Who was the ninth one? What do you know about the ninth one? Did she say: No, it’s a sin. No, there’s another way. No, you need to call these people. What did she tell her?
Hawkins: I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure the young girl was a Catholic young girl that she knew from church. You see this thing often. The mantra, especially of young men, who’ve been told by their moms: It’s not your opinion, whatever you decide. Really, when you say, “It’s up to you and I’ll support you either way,” that’s really code for “You’re in this all alone and I won’t support you.” Really, that’s what we’re fighting against. People will say: I’ll support you whatever you choose. That’s code for you should just take care of this.
Mike: I want to give listeners and those that will listen to the streaming download edition of this later today, and those that will get it free as a preview, how can someone – there are a lot of people listening that have college-aged kids. There are also an awful lot that will listen that are pro-life and may not even know about Students for Life. How can they assist, support, help you guys?
Hawkins: You can go to our website, StudentsForLife.org. If you’re a student or a parent of a student, you can click right there: College, High School, Med, Law. We have step-by-step guides for how to get young people involved, how to get involved at home, how to get involved in your church, how to get involved in your school. If you’re an adult who wants to support the pro-life movement, there’s an option and a way to do that as well.
Mike: When is Students for Life having an event in Louisiana that I can attend?
Hawkins: We were out in colleges this fall in Louisiana with our Planned Parenthood project. Next time we’re there, we’re just going to have to let you know and get you out there to see these conversations happening in real time.

Mike: I have to tell you, I’m going to try to get my daughters to sign up. They have one at LSU. Her twin sister is at Southeastern.
Hawkins: We have groups at both of those schools.
Mike: See there, ask and you shall receive. Are you actually going to Mordor to brave the snow?
Hawkins: Heck yeah. I’m in Manhattan right now. I have to board a train in a couple hours to go back down to DC. We’ll be out there in the snow. I’ll be up on the stage at the March for Life, waving hello to the crowd. Then back down, passing out the signs in the trenches. I’ll be at the Supreme Court with my trusty bullhorn where we’ll be blocking out the angry shouts from the ten protestors that
show up, making sure that everyone who walks by the March for Life is excited and ready to abolish abortion this year.

Mike: There is a homily that a friend of mine sent me a long time ago. It was about a rally such as yours, but it was happening someplace in Canada. There was a small contingent of angry protestors that you just mentioned. One of the protestors, he had the bullhorn and was screaming obscenities and all sorts of things at the students and the other people out there praying rosaries. One man with the life crowd walked over to the guy and said: Excuse me. He handed him a card the size of a business card, smiled at him and walked off. Then the guy stopped and left. You know what the card said
Hawkins: No. What did it say?
Mike: It said: Your mother and your father were pro-life and Jesus loves you.
Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – "Abortion, and even contraception, even in the prevention of pregnancy, is verboten in church teaching. This goes all the way back prior – this is taken directly from the gospels, directly from the Old Testament, and then passed on traditionally." Check out today’s transcript […]
