Mandeville, LA – This talk was delivered on 18 May, 2017 at Saint Catherine of Lebouré Catholic Church in Middletown, NJ.
How to apply The Faith to your vocation and change the world.
There’s only 1 reconciliation and one act of contrition so why do we treat Sin as though it only occurs at home?
• Begin with a JP II quote:
“Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God. The loftiness of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life even in its temporal phase.”
• The Modern World has taught us a powerful and fatally flawed lesson: he who dies with the most toys wins. As my friend Joseph Pearce reminded me recently this should actually say “he who dies with the most toys dies.”
• This comes from the Star Spangled Heresy of Americanism & can be summed up like this: “To pursue material wealth AS a path to salvation” and that is what we are to discuss tonight.
[Talk – Max Weber, Martin Luther et al]
• Let’s begin with a simple revolutionary concept here: we are Roman Catholics for a reason: we believe that heaven cannot be found in a hash or an ice cream container made by hippy apostates in Vermont. We also believe that Heaven is a place to direct all our effort and energy into obtaining and it isn’t of this world. In fact this world can’t be heaven because it is filled with demons and I’m not just talking about the Democrat party.
• In February 1953, Father Leonard Feeney summed up our ultimate cause as ‘Murican Catholics.
[talk about Fr. Feeney-Brother Francis, St Benedict Center et al]
“We believe that the Catholic Faith is not being preached in its purity and strength here in the United States. We believe that this is a cheated country — a country cheated of the one important and necessary thing: the knowledge of what a man must do to attain eternal life. We believe that this has happened because certain conspicuous Catholics, knowing neither America nor the Faith, have taken it upon themselves to make the Faith more agreeable to America — by putting it on a par with other religions and denying the point of its existence, which is to be the single divinely-ordained way to salvation.”
• [Talk –Father Feeney letter to Eisenhower-HIS vocation]
“Here is what I have to tell you, Dwight Eisenhower, Mr. President, head of our great nation: Unless you become a Catholic, a Roman Catholic, before you die and unless you…become an adopted son of God the Father…and a child of the Blessed Virgin Mary…you will never save your soul.”
• [Talk, Fr. Feeney was a man who took his vocation seriously]
• White House isn’t Feeney’s church etc…
• Where’s you vocational workplace?
[Talk – the fallacy of two confessionals: work, private life.]
[Talk – living our vocations as gentlemen – in all that we do]
• dress
• language
• demeanor
Nearly every Pope in the modern age has defended vocational, Catholic work beginning with Leo XIII in Rerum Nevarum, Pope Pius X in PASCENDI DOMINICI GREGIS, Pope Pius XII in instituting the Feast of St Joseph The Worker, The Secon Vatican Council’s Apostolicam Actuositatem, John Paul II in LABOREM EXERCENS and Benedict XVI in Caritas et Veritate.
• Importance of Papal decrees/encyclicals on these topics.
On the basis of these illuminations emanating from the Source himself, the Church has always proclaimed what we find expressed in modern terms in the teaching of the Second Vatican Council: “Just as human activity proceeds from man, so it is ordered towards man. For when a man works he not only alters things and society, he develops himself as well. He learns much, he cultivates his resources, he goes outside of himself and beyond himself. Rightly understood, this kind of growth is of greater value than any external riches which can be garnered … Hence, the norm of human activity is this: that in accord with the divine plan and will, it should harmonize with the genuine good of the human race, and allow people as individuals and as members of society to pursue their total vocation and fulfil it”79. John Paul II
Such a vision of the values of human work, or in other words such a spirituality of work, fully explains what we read in the same section of the Council’s Pastoral Constitution with regard to the right meaning of progress: “A person is more precious for what he is than for what he has. Similarly, all that people do to obtain greater justice, wider brotherhood, and a more humane ordering of social relationships has greater worth than technical advances. For these advances can supply the material for human progress, but of themselves alone they can never actually bring it about”80.
Pius XII on Feast of St Joseph the worker: “O glorious Patriarch, Saint Joseph, humble and just artisan of Nazareth, thou hast given to all Christians and particularly to us an example of a perfect life through diligent labor and admirable union with Jesus and Mary. Assist us in our daily work in order that we, Catholic artisans, may also see in it an effective means of glorifying God, of sanctifying ourselves, and of being a useful member in the society in which we live. These should be the highest ideals for all our actions.”
[ Talk on imitation of Christ as gentlemen at work.]
• Apostles were called to be fishers of men.
• Christ used work ethics in his parables. Repayment of the 100 talents example.
[Talk – Christ told us the correct order of our affairs.]
• Restoring the order gentlemen!
• No power but what The Father gives.
[Conclusion – the easy way vs the virtuous way.]
• Chesterton quote.
“A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.”
