This Weekend In Founders History – 4 & 5 August
On this day in 1790, the Revenue-Marine was established by Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, later renamed the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915, the service merged with United States Life-Saving Service to become the United States Coast Guard.
August 4, 1821, the first issue of the Saturday Evening Post was published, making it the oldest magazine in the United States. It started as Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette but was purchased and became the Saturday Evening Post.
In 1830 on this day, the original town of Chicago was legally recognized, as surveyor James Thompson’s map is marked with this date.
One notable birthday for August 5, 1749, that of Thomas Lynch, Jr., lawyer from South Carolina and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
