This Day In Founding Fathers History – 16 January 2013
On this day in 1920, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibition of alcohol, was ratified by Nebraska, North Carolina, Utah, Missouri, and Wyoming, providing the required 36 states for ratification. The amendment was certified on January 29. The Volstead Act set the initiation date of January 17, 1920 for the amendment to take effect. 1
One notable birthday on this day in history in 1757, that of Samuel McIntire, Salem, Massachusetts architect and carver. McIntire and his two brothers all began as builders during their teenage years, but Samuel’s work gained the attention of one of Salem’s most distinguished merchants, Elias Hasket Derby. McIntire built and remodeled many homes for Derby, which garnered the attention of other wealthy Salemites. As he was such a skilled woodcarver, McIntire was drawn to the Adamesque style of design, named for English architect Robert Adams and made popular by Boston architect Charles Bullfinch. McIntire designed and built many mansions, churches and public buildings in Salem, as well as furniture, figureheads for ships, and statues. 2
