At the conclusion of the Federal Convention of 1787, Philadelphia Mayor, Samuel Powell’s wife famously asked Ben Franklin “Well Dr. Franklin, what do we have a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin‘s famous reply “a republic, if you can keep it” might be remembered by WhoDats voting on yet another, double digit slate of  amendments to the Louisiana Constitution. If all passed, that would bring the total amendments added to the 1974 Constitution to 189. How anyone can possibly keep up with all these Amendments defies explanation and in the process perverts the Louisiana Constitution into nothing more than an expanding melange of legalese, the opposite of what a Constitution is ratified for.

When Julienne Poydras and company adjourned Louisiana’s first Constitution Convention of 1811 there were only 7 Articles, today there are 14 that contain 26 sections, how many can you name? James Madison said of this web of legal deceit and it’s effect on liberty and good government “It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.” The Public Affairs research Council correctly points out that “A constitution is supposed to be a state’s fundamental law that contains the essential elements of government organization, the basic principles of governmental powers and the enumeration of citizen rights.” I agree and will add there is not 1 Amendment on the ballot that is “fundamental” making an across the board “no vote” advisable.

To my numerous Roman Catholic friends, please remember your first priority in civics is to God then to political parties or issues. To keep this in mind, just remember that “Ya mama was pro-life, dawlin’ ” and certain incumbent members of the U.S. Senate, NEVER have been.
