This Day In Founders History – 12 September
On this day in 1814, General John Stricker’s Maryland Militia fought British forces led by General Robert Ross at the Battle of North Point near Baltimore. It was a tactical victory for the British, although a strategic victory for American forces, buying them time to defend Baltimore.
One notable birthday on this day in history in 1818, that of Richard Gatling, American inventor of the Gatling gun. Gatling noticed that the majority of soldiers fighting in the Civil War died due to disease, not the gunshots themselves. He saw the Gatling gun as the way to eliminate the need for large armies, as the Gatling gun would enable a soldier to do the work of as many as a hundred men, thus eliminating the exposure to battle and thus disease.
