Mike:  There is an absolutely ghastly and repulsive post at Salon.com.  This was just sent to me by a listener friend.  When I started browsing it, I thought: Am I reading this right?  Here’s the title — you people that are pro-life, pull over.  If you’re standing, sit down.  You abortionistas out there, this won’t faze you at all.  You might even stand up and cheer.  Here’s the title of the piece: “So what if abortion ends life?  I believe that life starts at conception. And it’s never stopped me from being pro-choice.”  This woman actually makes the argument — this is an amazing argument for a citizen of libtardia to make — that all men are not created equal, that it’s okay to abort some of them because they’re not created equal.  Really?  Really?

Some of us have argued that this is the logical end of the ghastly pro-murder, pro-choice movement.  Ultimately, if they’re going to have any principle to stand on, this is the principle.  We’ve now perfected abortion and we now have DNA sampling and chromosomal sampling and what have you.  If we can find future DAs (dumb you-know-whats), if we can find future dropouts and rejects — here’s a really good one: what if we could identify future homosexuals — then we can act as kind, caring, compassionate humans and exterminate them in the womb and prevent them from having to suffer a life of stupidity, a life of indolence.  What if we could just identify people that are just going to be common laborers?  We already have enough of them.  XC429BA fetus is terminated.  We don’t need any more laborers in that portion of the world.  [mocking] “Come on, Mike, you’re being ridiculous.”  No, I’m not.  This is logically where this goes from here.  People that call themselves humans like the ghastly Mary Elizabeth Williams saying: So what life begins at conception?  We’re Americans.  We can snuff it out.  We’re being kind to those we’re exterminating.  I’m reading this going: Am I actually reading this?

As Roe v. Wade enters its fifth decade, we find ourselves at one of the most schizo moments in our national relationship with reproductive choice. [Mike: First of all, we don’t have a national relationship. We have a force-fed edict from Mordor on the Potomac River and an illegitimate court body called the SCOTUS, the Supreme Court. It is not a legislature, it is a court, but of course it acts as a legislature today, and people want it to act as a legislature.] In the past year we’ve endured the highest number of abortion restrictions ever. Yet support for abortion rights is at an all-time high, with seven in 10 Americans in favor of letting Roe v. Wade stand, [Mike: We talked about that poll last week] allowing for reproductive choice in all or “most” cases. [Mike: The culture that elects for that is not worthy of being defended, I’ll say it again.] That’s a stunning 10 percent increase from just a decade ago. And in the midst of this unique moment, Planned Parenthood has taken the bold step of reframing the vernacular – moving away from the easy and easily divisive words “life” and “choice.” Instead, as a new promotional film acknowledges, “It’s not a black and white issue.”

It’s a move whose time is long overdue. It’s important, because when we don’t look at the complexities of reproduction…[Mike: What is complex about biology? This is simple biology. Every species on the planet reproduces. It’s only men and man that seems to have a choice in the matter. You don’t see dogs out there, horses or any of the other mammal life, they don’t have these complexity issues. They are driven to do what? See to it that their species survives.]

When we on the pro-choice side get cagey around the life question, it makes us illogically contradictory. I have friends who have referred to their abortions in terms of “scraping out a bunch of cells”…[Mike: So she has multiple friends who have had abortions. What’s wrong with this picture here? Now it’s we do it because we like to go out and party on Friday nights. We might hook up with Mr. Wrong and I might have a shot of tequila too many. So what I got knocked up? There’s a George Tiller around the corner. He’ll take care of it. Let me get a few cells scraped out. This is how human life, ladies and gentlemen, is described by some, “let’s scrape a few cells out.” It’s sad. All you can do is pray for these people. Their complicity in high crimes should be evident for all to see. If you don’t see it, perhaps you’re the next to commit such a crime.] Why can’t we agree that how they felt about their pregnancies was vastly different, but that it’s pretty silly to pretend that what was growing inside of them wasn’t the same? Fetuses aren’t selective like that. They don’t qualify as human life only if they’re intended to be born. [Mike: So it’s not a human life only if the bearer intends for the child to actually be born. That is a novel way to look at this, isn’t it? Is it a life? No, I don’t intend it to be born. I’m going to carry it around for a couple months to get an insurance premium spike.]

When we try to act like a pregnancy doesn’t involve human life, we wind up drawing stupid semantic lines in the sand: first trimester abortion vs. second trimester vs. late term, dancing around the issue trying to decide if there’s a single magic moment when a fetus becomes a person. Are you human only when you’re born? Only when you’re viable outside of the womb?

We’re so intimidated by the wingnuts, we get spooked out of having these conversations. We let the archconservatives browbeat us with the concept of “life”…[Mike: It’s not the archconservative that is browbeating you with the concept of life, madam. It is God that is browbeating you. It is your maker and your creator that is browbeating you. It is not the human. The human is carrying on the eternal, the supernatural. Your issue really is not with the man that bears the word, it is with the deity that proclaimed the word.] Why? Because when they wave the not-even-accurate notion that “abortion stops a beating heart” they think they’re going to trick us into some damning admission. [Mike: Now it all involves deceit. If you’re trying to stop the ghastly termination of life inside of the mother, then you’re trying to trick them. It’s all about trickery now. These are the same people that say you follow this mysticism that surrounds all of human existence. You say there is no God. If there was a God, he would have stopped that abortion, wouldn’t he, as Kant might argue.] They believe that if we call a fetus a life they can go down the road of making abortion murder. [Mike: Well, it is.] And I think that’s what concerns the hell out of those of us who support unrestricted reproductive freedom.

But we make choices about life all the time in our country. We make them about men and women in other nations. We make them about prisoners in our penal system. We make them about patients with terminal illnesses and accident victims. We still have passionate debates about the justifications of our actions as a society, but we don’t have to do it while being bullied around by the vague idea that if you say we’re talking about human life, then the jig is up, rights-wise.

It seems absurd to suggest that the only thing that makes us fully human is the short ride out of some lady’s vagina. That distinction may apply neatly legally, but philosophically, surely we can do better. Instead, we let right-wingers perpetuate the sentimental fiction that no one with a heart — and certainly no one who’s experienced the wondrous miracle of family life — can possibly resist tiny fingers and tiny toes growing inside a woman’s body. We give a platform to the notion that, as Christina Locke opined in a recent New York Times Op-Ed, “motherhood had slyly changed us.”

Mike:  They’re now even contemptuous of being a mother because motherhood may change Carrie Bradshaw into a nurturing, caring example of the female gender.  Mothers are not supposed to be mothering unless they choose to be.  They’re not born to be that way.  They only choose to be that way.  Isn’t that great?  Maybe then this is why some wind up confused or biologically confused and ultimately turn to the other sex, because the motherhood instinct didn’t kick in.  We can now repudiate even the reason why life was brought about, which was to promote and perpetuate life.  All of our existence now is all to be determined by us, by man.  We are in control of everything according to Ms. Williams.  You then have no reason to not do almost anything or to do something in your life other than whether or not you choose to.

This is why the idea that reason informs civilization, that this is one of the fatal conceits of the last 150 years, that you can be informed by reason and that all will turn out well.  See the French Revolution for evidence to the contraire.  See the First and Second World Wars.  See the rise of the Third Reich.  These men all created justifications for everything that they did, for every tragedy visited upon their fellow man, for the chopping and lopping of heads off in the French Revolution, for the storming of the village of the Vendee in the French Revolution, for all of the atrocities of the early part of the 20^th century, for what happened in China under Mao, and in the near east under the Khmer Rouge.  These were all justified using reason.  You can say that it was sickness, that it was diabolical, but reason is what was used.

My belief that life begins at conception is mine to cling to. And if you believe that it begins at birth, or somewhere around the second trimester, or when the kid finally goes to college, that’s a conversation we can have, one that I hope would be respectful and empathetic and fearless.

Mike:  This woman here is deranged, ladies and gentlemen, deranged.  Maybe logically and using reason more consistent than other abortionists but no less deranged.
