This Day In Founders History – 21 November

On this day in 1780, Major Benjamin Tallmadge and his dragoons traveled across Long Island Sound. They captured and burned down Manor St. George, which the British had turned into a fort. On their march back to Mt. Sinai, New York Tallmadge stopped outside Coram and ordered the burning of 300 tons of hay stockpiled by the British for the winter. Upon hearing the news, Washington wrote to Tallmadge: “I have received, with much pleasure, the report of your successful enterprise upon Fort St. George…and was particularly well pleased with the destruction of the hay, which must, I should conceive, be severely felt by the enemy at this time. I beg you to accept my thanks for your judicious planning and spirited execution of this business.”

One notable birthday on this day in history in 1729, that of Josiah Bartlett. Bartlett practiced as a physician in New Hampshire. He served as commander of a militia regiment in 1775 and soon after elected to the Continental Congress, where he served on several committees and signed the Declaration. He also participated in drafting and ratifying the Articles of Confederation. He later served as a member of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, attended the Federal Convention of 1787, and was elected Governor of New Hampshire.
