This Day In Founders History – 26 November

On this day in 1776, “Congress being informed that some persons in this city of Philadelphia, governed by principles inimical to the cause of America, and with views of avarice and extortion, have monopolized and engrossed shoes, stockings, and other necessaries for the army, whilst the soldiers of the Continent…are exposed to the injuries of the weather, at this inclement season: Resolved, That it be recommended to the assembly of the state of Pennsylvania, to adopt such immediate measures for remedying this evil…and for preventing like pernicious practices in future.” It was then requested that Pennsylvania’s council of safety “cause application to be made to the housekeepers and others in the said state, for as many blankets and woolen stockings as each can spare” and that they were to be delivered immediately to General Washington and the soldiers under his command. The council of safety was to then appoint people to appraise the value of the collected items so that a fair price could be paid.

In 1777 on this day, Continental Congress in session, the Board of War gave their report, “Resolved, That it be recommended to the commonwealth of Virginia, to appoint proper persons to re-inlist the soldiers of their first nine regiments, whose times of service are now expiring, and, in failure thereof, to take some speedy and effectual course for supplying their places in the continental army; and Congress agree to allow the men inlisting for the war, or three years, the usual bounty given to such recruits.”
