Faith Carried The Founding Fathers Through And It Can Carry Us Through, Too

Background

Mandeville, LA – Exclusive Transcript – The only way you can really stay the course, I think anyway, is through the exercise of your faith.  Just know that this is part of my Lord’s plan for me.  I have to execute the difficult parts, as well as the happy parts, with equal fervor and equal cheer, and just be of the belief that this was as it was intended to be.  Who am I to say no to the challenge?  Check out today’s transcript for the rest…

Mike:  Let me get back to Dan in Connecticut.  Hello, Dan.  Let’s finish up with what it was you were talking about.

Caller Dan:  I was in California concluding a real estate transaction.  One of the components of the transaction was a permitting process.  I can tell you California is the absolute most obfuscated process on Earth.

Mike:  I’ve heard.

Caller Dan:  When I went to the clerk, I asked him: What is the issue with the delay?   He said to me: We’re going to hire a bunch more clerks.  What’s a bunch more?  Ten to twenty, and we’re going to have them ready in about a month and this will expedite the process.  Here’s I’m scratching my head, being a [r]epublican, being a constitutionalist, being a Jeffersonian, and told him: Don’t you think the laws that are there now are so onerous and egregiously disproportionate to the transactions you’re currently processing that maybe we should just soften those laws?  Mike, you would have thought I was speaking to him in Greek.

republican-shirt-ifyouhavetoask1Mike:  You were.  That was a foreign language.

Caller Dan:  It goes back to one concept that I thank you over and over again, and I try to teach my daughter: Don’t engage in the trivial pursuit of conversation without the absolute exchange and debate of ideas, ideas that made Jefferson and Madison — Hamilton and Jefferson, as you know, Mike, used to debate regularly in Latin and Greek, and not because they could but because they knew that was the way statesmen of past used to do it.  They wanted to embrace thought processes.  They wanted to expand their basis of knowledge.  Mike, you are a beacon of that and I wanted to thank you.  I wish you a tremendous happy Independence Day.  I’m not giving up the fight.

Mike:  I would never suggest that anyone should give up the fight, Dan.  I hope I didn’t say that people should give up the fight.

Caller Dan:  No, you never did, Mike.  I’m just reaffirming the fact that we’ve got to keep on keeping on…

Mike:  We’ll keep on keeping on.  Sometimes it seems like such a daunting task.  The only way you can really get through it — here I go again going to get squishy and off the script that we radio hosts are supposed to follow.  The only way you can really stay the course, I think anyway, is through the exercise of your faith.  Just know that this is part of my Lord’s plan for me.  I have to execute the difficult parts, as well as the happy parts, with equal fervor and equal cheer, and just be of the belief that this was as it was intended to be.  Who am I to say no to the challenge?  When you don’t get your way, especially when you’re talking about politics and issues and maybe even economic affairs, you tend to think there’s somebody out to get you, or it would have worked out if it hadn’t been for those meddling kids, instead of looking at it and just saying: That’s the way it was intended to be.  There was a lesson there that I was supposed to learn that the Lord just blessed me with and I ought to be happy about it.  You don’t want to lose a hand or a kid in the process.  You don’t want to poke an eye out or go bankrupt in the process.  I think there is something for the humility of subjecting yourself to the higher authority.  Sometimes you just say: I can’t control this thing.  I’m just a little molecule in this grand scheme of this thing we call life.  I’m just going to accept it and have faith that that is as it was supposed to be.

Founders Corner – Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Speech

How many people do you think think that today as opposed to how many may have thought that before the advent of science told us it’s just a bunch of religious, mysticism garbage you just spewed out.  How many atheists and agnostics are listening to me right now going, [mocking] “That’s stupid!  That’s idiotic!  You’re going to get people killed, you imbecile!  How’d this guy get on this radio station?”  Even if you go back to ancient times, they were sacrificing bodies and cutting heads off at the top of Incan pyramids at all.  I’m not sanctioning that, but they did it because it was a human instinct that there’s something at work here that I can’t see but I need to make it happy.  This is where Christianity comes along and says: No, you need to make Him happy.  That is lost in the 21st century by and large.  Anyone that is of any religiosity whatsoever is a Jesus freak wacko, some sort of weirdo that you don’t want to socialize with, don’t want to be in business with, don’t want to have to go to any kind of an extracurricular event with because they may intone some Biblical verse or some virtuous statute to you.  You don’t want to have to suffer that.  Oh, no, heaven forefend.  You’d rather go into a theater and hear nonstop epithets hurled at you.

article-v-pamphlet-adCaller Dan:  I think you’re 100 percent right.  I also have to say, at any time there’s a horrible tragedy in our great nation, the first thing our politicians do is take this Bible out of their top drawer, blow the dust off that’s been on there for years, ask one of their assistants to find a passage.  I make my daughters laugh.  I have two daughters like you, Mike.  I say: If you want to make God laugh, why don’t you go ahead and plan?

Mike:  That’s a good one.  I’m going to remember that.

Caller Dan:  Why don’t you ask him what he wants you to do with your life in a meaningful, positive way?  Then read the street signs that God gives you.  I think that’s the right way to go.

Mike:  One of the other parts of the Declaration that is probably not thought of as having any consequence or bearing whatsoever — as I told the audience earlier today, the legal part of the Declaration is all that really matters, the last two paragraphs.  In the last two paragraphs, you find that “. . . in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions . . . And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence . . .”  What is it that Jefferson is referring to?  It is, as Richard Fleming coined the phrase and Charles Murray repeated it, it’s that obedience to the unenforceable that you can’t see there.  It’s the observation of a humble people that we’re hoping that divine providence is on our side and is with us.  I’ve talked about this before.

Founders Corner – Patrick Henry – Why did they say “We the People”?

If you read Washington’s correspondence from the time he was selected as the commander in chief of the Continental Army on the 12th of June 1775 to the time he went to Congress in 1783 and gave them his sword back and said, [mocking] “I quit.  I am not your king and don’t want to be.  I’m going home to grow tobacco and watch the Potomac River flow by.”  If you read Washington’s correspondence, you find in almost every letter some reference to the Divine or to Providence or some spiritual reference where he humbles himself and says: This was intended and I have Divine Providence to thank for it.  Keep that in mind as you revel tomorrow with beer and hot dogs and fireworks and everything else other than thoughts about independence and how it came about, which was the grandest act of secession in the history of the world.  Dan, I appreciate the call, my friend.

Caller Dan:  God bless you, all the best to you.

Mike:  God bless you, too, sir.  I appreciate that.
