Saint Joseph Our Greatest Role Model Of A “Just Man”

Mandeville, LA – Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Joseph, the Holy spouse of Our Lady and putative father of Our Lord. In Holy Scripture there are only 3 men who are called a “just man” the highest compliment a man can be paid; they are Christ himself, Cornelius the centurion and Saint Joseph.

In Matthew chapter 1 verse 19 we read: “Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.” While he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of Saint Joseph, on this day in 2005.

“St Luke presents the Virgin Mary as “engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David” (Lk 1:27). However it is the evangelist Matthew who gives the greatest prominence to the putative father of Jesus, pointing out that, through him, the Child was legally inserted in David’s line and thus he realized the Scriptures, in which the Messiah was prophesied as the “son of David. But Joseph’s role certainly cannot be reduced to this aspect. He is the model of the “just” man (Mt 1:19), who in perfect sympathy with his spouse, welcomes the Son of God made man and guards over his human growth.”

At the suggestion of a friend, 3 years ago I began a daily devotion to Saint Joseph that has brought to me and my family Graces I cannot count and it is with this confidence I say, Saint Joseph who took the child Jesus and his mother into Egypt to preserve him from the slaughter of Herod, protect all our families. Below is the daily prayer I say for Saint Joseph’s intercession.

Saint Joseph protector of all families, I come to you to intercede for me and to bring my family to jesus. He was once the little child that you protected when you took Mary and fled by night into Egypt in order to preserve Him from the slaughter decreed by Herod.

Just as you protected Jesus, I ask you to protect my family from all the evil that roams the world. Please bring my petitions to Jesus, for He will not refuse you.

Saint Joseph, I know you will not refuse me this favor. Amen
